Dualit contacted us to find out whether we could help protect an innovative device they had designed and created.
Their invention is a device the size of a large coffee mug, which tackles a recycling challenge.
It opens used aluminium coffee pods so that the coffee can be removed for composting, and the aluminium pod can be cleaned and recycled. This allows the pod to be fully recycled rather than thrown into the bin.
Previous attempts to invent something that solved this problem resulted in devices that were either large and not very practical, or didn’t separate the two components adequately.
The product created by Dualit was small, portable and successfully separated the pod components. It was also nicely designed, so it blended into the background of a kitchen.
We knew that as this was the first new device of its type it was important for Dualit to protect their intellectual property in three different ways.
We registered a patent for the invention itself, so that the mechanism was protected.
We registered the design of the product, so that the design could not be copied.
And we applied for a trademark for the name, EcoPressTM to ensure that the name was recognised as belonging to Dualit.
